Creating a Publication


Hail's Publications make it super easy to package up recent articles and share them to your community in beautiful, perfectly-formatted designs for newsletters, blogs, digital magazines and more.

  1. Head to the Publications section in the main menu on the left-hand side of your Hail account.
  2. In the Publications section, you’ll find any existing publications and the ‘+ Publication’ button. Click that and choose which publication style you’d like to create. 
  3. Depending on which Hail plan your organisation is on, you’ll have access to 1–5 different styles: Newsletter, Blog, Magazine, Gazette and Folio. 

    Note: you can always preview and change styles while you are creating/editing your publication.

Newsletter

Ideal for weekly, monthly and other short-term periodicals, the ‘Newsletter’ is perfect for scannable content with prominent notices.

Blog

The ‘Blog’ style has strong branding with a traditional layout focusing on featured and latest articles, alongside search and tag features.

Magazine

With a focus on large, engaging photography, the ‘Magazine’ is ideal for creating an impression with brochure-like communications.

Gazette

Don't let the ‘Gazette's’ newspaper-like layout fool you — it's just as slick as the Newsletter with extra features such as Google Calendar integration.

Folio

With it's rich, tag-based design, the ‘Folio’ handles hundreds of articles for easy browsing of yearbooks, info packs, periodicals and other large publications.


Steps

  1. Select the publication style you want, and press Create!
  2. You’ll find yourself on a blank unpublished publication and all you need to do is start filling it in. We’ll start from the top and work our way down.

  3. Feature article — Click here to open the article browser and select an article as your publication’s featured article. This will be used as its focus at the top of the newsletter/blog or for the magazine/folio cover, depending on the chosen publication style.
  4. Publication Title — Click into this section and start typing to give your publication a name, for example ‘Newsletter #1 February 2024 and click Save.
  5. Editorial/Notices — Click into this section and start typing to add an Editorial and/or Notices to your publication. You can format the text with headers, bold, italics, emoji's, links, lists and quotes by simply clicking any of the formatting options in the top bar in the Editorial/Notices section, or by highlighting the text you wish to format and choosing from the green buttons that appear. Be sure to Save.
  6. Selected Articles — Click + Add Article(s) to open the article browser and select multiple articles to add to the publication. Once added you can order them by simply dragging and dropping them in place, or by clicking 'Sort by Date'.
  7. You have now completed your first publication and are able to check it out in all its glory by clicking on the Preview button just under the Save button, near the top of the sidebar. You can also click on the arrow under Publication Style and select a different style, then hit Preview once again to see how it looks in other available styles. 
  8. When you’re happy with it, as with articles, you simply hit Publish, and then choose where you would like to share it. You can add it straight to your website, or share it with your Connections.

Note: Only Hail Owners, Admin, and Publishers can create and edit publications.
