Guide to Creating a Classic Style Website



Step 1: Create a New Website

  1. Head to the Websites section in your Hail account, found in the left-hand menu.
  2. Select "Create"
  3. Type in a Web Address. The web address is the URL you are choosing for your website. This is a very important step. The website address is permanent, and can not be changed once created.

    💡 You CAN replace it with a custom domain once the website is published.

  4. Choose your style. In this instance- you will choose Classic. (This style can be changed at any point)
  5. Select 'Create' to move onto the next step.
  6. If you have already completed this step, and are continuing your build or editing your website, look for the website you wish to edit in your library and click edit.

Step 2: Add a Featured Image, Video or Article

This is the very top section of your website, where you will display your chosen media.

  1. Choose your style of media, by clicking on Articles, Images or Video.
  2. Click "+ Add " to choose your library
  3. Use the dropdown to select Display Size - regular or full width are your options.


Step 3: Enter Your Website Title

  1. Type in your Website title. This could be your organisation name or the name of website. This title will appear next to your logo and above your featured media.
  2. Toggle "Show Title" on or off depending on your preference.
  3. 📌 In Classic style, this title will appear next to your logo and above your featured media.


Step 4: Fill in the Main Text Block

  1. Scroll to the Main text block.
  2. Add a welcoming message or intro about the website.
  3. Use the formatting bar to style text: headings, bold, bullet points, links, etc.


Step 5: Add Website Buttons (Optional)

  1. Click the Choose a block dropdown.
  2. Select a Website Buttons Block which you have already created in the Blocks section of Hail.

  3. Select the location where you would like them to display. You can select an option, preview your website and change it again until you are happy with the location.
  4. You can also edit your existing Website buttons Block by selecting the 'edit icon' next to the Block name.


Step 6: Add Sidebar Text (Optional)

  1. Scroll to Sidebar text block.
  2. Add supporting info such as contact details, announcements, reminders, term dates or important links.


Step 7: Add Promo Blocks

  1. Click the Choose a block dropdown.
  2. Select a Promo Block which you have already created in the Blocks section of Hail.

  3. You can also edit your existing Promo Block by selecting the 'edit icon' next to the Block name.


Step 8: Add Articles and Publications

Articles and publications appear in a blog type feed, in date order or with pinned items first.

  1. Articles: Add or pin articles from your library.
  2. Publications: Pin featured publications to appear first.
  3. Don't forget to tag your articles and the tag filter option will appear to the right of your feed.


Step 9: Add a Block

This section gives you the freedom to add any Block style to your website! Think sponsors blocks, photo galleries, values images.

  1. Scroll to the Blocks section.
  2. Click on the dropdown list to select a Block you have already created here.
  3. You can also edit your existing Blocks by selecting the 'edit icon' next to the Block name.


Step 10: Add a Video (Optional)

  1. Scroll to the Video section.
  2. Upload or embed videos to enrich the site experience.


Step 11: Customise Website Settings

Located in the right-hand 'Website Settings' menu:

  • Alert: Set urgent messages for site visitors. This appears on the top of the screen above your navigation.
  • Website Logo: Upload your logo if you would like it to be different from your default logo.
  • Translate: Enable to support multiple languages.
  • Google Calendar: Toggle the calendar on or off. You can also add a Google calendar link if you have one that is different from your global settings.
  • Facebook / Instagram Feed: Link social media here for the feed to appear on your website.
  • Website Contacts: Add website contacts here to overwrite the default contacts you have listed in your global settings. If you are happy to display global contacts, toggle this option off.
  • SEO Settings: Improve visibility on search engines.
  • Custom Code: For advanced users to add custom HTML/CSS.

Step 12: Configure Navigation (Quick-links)

  1. At the very top of the page, click "Navigation for this website".
  2. You can click here to edit your website navigation links.
  3. Toggle navigation on and off here. If you toggle navigation links off- no menu bar will appear at the top of your website.

Step 13: Save and Preview

  1. Click the green "Save" button at the top right. (good practice to save along the way as well!)
  2. Use "Preview" to see how the site looks before publishing.

Step 14: Publish Your Website

  1. After reviewing your content, click "Publish".
  2. A shareable link will appear – click Copy to share it, or Open to view it live.
