Unlisted, Unsubscribed and Bounced contacts.

When sending communications through Hail Mail, your audience is made up of different types of contacts - based on their status and how they interact with your mail lists. Here’s what each contact type means:

What is an unlisted contact?

Unlisted contacts are email addresses that exist in your Hail account but are not attached to any of your active mail lists.

Unlisted contacts will not receive mail from you. So it's best to either add these contacts to a mailing list or delete them.

Why you might have unlisted contacts?

When you delete a Mail list, and you DO NOT select the option to delete all email adds in that mailing list as well, you with end up with a whole group of contacts that are no longer attached to a mailing list.

What is an Unsubscribed contact?

Unsubscribed contacts are people who have chosen to opt out of receiving future emails from you.

  • When a recipient clicks the unsubscribe link in a Hail Mail email, they’re automatically marked as unsubscribed.
  • This ensures your emails comply with anti-spam regulations and respect recipient preferences.
  • If someone unsubscribes accidentally, they’ll need to resubscribe manually via one of your public signup forms or, if they have given you permission- you can re-subscribe them.

What is an Bounced contact?

A bounced contact is an email address that could not be delivered.

There are two main types of bounces:

  • Soft bounce: A temporary issue, such as a full inbox or a server problem. Hail will usually try again automatically.
  • Hard bounce: A permanent issue, such as an invalid or non-existent email address. These contacts are automatically marked as bounced and won’t be sent future emails.

Keeping your lists clean and up to date - by removing invalid or outdated addresses - helps improve your deliverability and ensures your messages reach the right people.
