Tips: Nailing your header images on your articles

Some tips on how to find the perfect image for your article header.

  1. Landscape vs Portrait

It is always tricky to know which orientation is best for different areas. Above are two articles where we chose a landscape and portrait image as header images. Here are the results and what the article looks like once published:

Landscape wins! In this example the landscape header image fits well! The portrait image has lost the faces of students.

When creating an article and trying to find an image for your header banner- Landscape is always the way to go.

Portrait doesn't work well for a header image, however, using a portrait image is sometimes unavoidable, so we'll share ways to make it work in your header section, later on in this article.

Portrait images are perfectly fine to use in your articles, though, to add to the body of your article or to attach at the end of your article.

  1. Selecting the focal point on your image.

Selecting the focal point once you upload your image, means that Hail will use that point as a centre marker to focus in on, when the image is used as an image banner.

To do this, simply:

  • Select an image to open it's window
  • Click on the edit icon next to the Focal Point/Face Detection section of the metadata
  • Click on the image to position the centre of your chosen focal point
  • Click on the '' to save

When selecting the focal point, it drastically improves the display of your chosen image:

  1. When you have an image that isn't perfectly landscape but has lots of info on it and you need all the information displayed in the header image

Take your image and use a tool to adjust the shape of your image.

We love Canva! It's a free tool and it's super easy to use! For example- I have this square info poster which will lose some info if displayed as is in an article header. Instead, I have added it to a landscape template and now it displays fully in my header image section of my article.
